Raising anchor

Today, I start a new adventure, both personally and professionally. After two fantastic years at Google, I’m raising anchor to sail, dive and explore.

My first stop will be my 10-year Harvard Business School reunion (gasp) this weekend. I’m looking forward to being back in Cambridge and catching up with my classmates. June 3rd I head to French Polynesia to relax in Bora Bora, sail and dive. Next, I’ll drive and tramp the length of New Zealand for a of couple weeks. I’ll sail more in the South Pacific, likely Tonga and the Cook Islands, and then head to Papua New Guinea. My father inspired my fascination with PNG and the Solomon Islands. I look forward to thinking of him while I’m there. After my mother died 15 years ago, our family mantra became, “life is short.” Taking time off now, is one way of embracing my memory of my parents. After PNG, I’ll head to Australia if all goes as planned.

I am extremely fortunate to have been at Google for the past two years. Stretching myself to lead the biggest team in Online Sales and Operations, and working in the Asia Pacific marketing group, were rewarding experiences. I will treasure my time at Google. Being surrounded by energetic and smart Googlers amid a supportive and innovative company culture was an exceptional experience. I have left Google, though, because I miss the challenge of being in a smaller, entrepreneurial company. I’ve decided it's time for me to move back into the consumer Internet market again-as a general manager growing a start-up or in a senior marketing/product role. I'm going to take the time to find the ‘right’ next challenge. I'm excited about the next steps!

Please keep checking my blog for updates. As well, send me updates about you, I want to keep in touch while I’m traveling.

All my best,

Hilary

  1. Hilary,

I don't know what I admire more: the amazing trip you're taking, or the inspirational reasons you're taking it. My parents have both passed, and I love international travel, so you're "life is short" mantra really resonates. Have a fantastic journey, and a wonderful experience.
