Driving New Zealand from the North Island to Queenstown in the South, included many firsts for me. Besides the obvious, being in New Zealand for the first time, other firsts included:
- Driving on the left side of the road (keep left!)
- Flying in a four-seater float plane above the Taupo region
- Careening down a river in a jet boat; laughing heartily as we did 360’s
- Spotting a Kiwi (the bird) in the wild
- Seeing a preserved Colossal squid at TePapa
- Landing on Franz-Josef glacier in a helicopter
- Watching a sea lion toss, tear and devour an octopus at Abel Tasman
- Playing pool in a culture that doesn’t require you to call your shots (and counts slop)
- Being in a place with few native predators-this may explain the easy-going culture and creation of anything that will get your adrenaline pumping (I did not go bungee jumping)
- Skiing in June at Treble Cone
- Stopping the car to let a dog herd its 200 sheep down the main highway
- Watching the All Blacks rugby team in a packed bar
- Laughing as the clever Kea birds tried to outsmart us at Doubtful Sound
- Watching Pleiades rise in the Southern hemisphere, the start of Maori New Year
Here are some visual highlights:
